Service Area Business SAB

A service area business is one that travels to its customers rather than serving them at a premises: a plumber, mobile mechanic, cleaner or landscaper. In Google Business Profile it hides the street address and lists the areas it covers instead.

The distinction matters because Google ranks service area businesses from a single verified point, not across the whole declared area. Declaring a wider area does not extend reach; it only changes who is told you will travel.

Formula
Verified location × Declared service areas
Where It Lives
  • Google Business ProfileWhere the service area is declared
  • Bing PlacesSame distinction applies
What Drives It
  • Verified address accuracy
  • Declared area size
  • Local content for each real target town
  • Proximity of the searcher
Causal Analysis: Widening the declared service area is the most common change made in the hope of more reach, and it changes nothing about ranking. Visibility still radiates from the verified point.
Benchmark

Most service area businesses see the large majority of inquiries from within a modest radius of the verified address, regardless of how wide the declared area is.

Common Mistake
Listing twenty towns to look bigger. It dilutes nothing and gains nothing, and it sets an expectation about travel that the business then has to decline.

How different roles think about this metric

Each function reads SAB through a different lens and takes different actions when it changes.

Business Owner
Get it right at setup. Switching a profile between storefront and service area later can trigger re-verification.
Office Manager
Keeps the declared areas honest so the business is not fielding jobs it will not travel to.

Common Questions About Service Area Business

Click any question to expand the answer.

Should I hide my address?
If customers do not come to you, yes. Google requires it, and an unhidden address for a home-run business risks suspension.
How do I rank in a neighbouring town?
With a genuine page about the work you do there, real evidence of having done it, and reviews that mention it. Adding the town to the service area list on its own does nothing.
