Local Search

Map Pack

The map pack is the block of three local business listings, with a map above them, that Google places at the top of results for searches with local intent. It sits above the ordinary blue links, which means the three businesses inside it take the majority of clicks for terms like "plumber near me" or "dentist open now".

Ranking in the map pack is a different exercise from ranking in the ordinary results. It is driven by your Google Business Profile, proximity to the searcher, review signals and the consistency of your business details across the web, rather than by the content of your website alone.

Formula
Relevance × Distance × Prominence (Google’s three stated local ranking factors)
Where It Lives
  • Google Business ProfileThe listing the map pack is drawn from
  • Google Search ConsoleImpressions and clicks for local queries
  • Bing PlacesThe equivalent listing for Bing’s local results
What Drives It
  • Google Business Profile completeness
  • Review count and recency
  • Proximity to the searcher
  • Citation consistency
  • Primary category selection
Causal Analysis: Map pack position moves for reasons that never appear in your website analytics. A drop is far more often a profile edit, a category change or a run of negative reviews than anything that happened to the site itself.
Benchmark

The three map pack results take roughly 44% of clicks on local-intent searches; position one alone takes about half of those.

Common Mistake
Choosing a broad primary category ("Contractor") instead of the specific one ("Roofing Contractor"). The specific category is what Google matches against the search, and the broad one puts you in a much larger field for terms you were never going to win.

How different roles think about this metric

Each function reads Map Pack through a different lens and takes different actions when it changes.

Business Owner
Usually the single highest-value place to be visible: it sits above every other result and is reached by fixing a profile rather than by publishing content.
Office Manager
The practical work lands here. Keeping hours, categories and holiday times correct is what holds the position.
Marketing Manager
Track position from several points across the service area, not from the office, or the number will always look better than it is.

Common Questions About Map Pack

Click any question to expand the answer.

How long does it take to appear in the map pack?
For an established business with a claimed profile, corrections to category, hours and service areas can move position within two to four weeks. Building the review and citation base to hold a competitive term takes closer to three months.
Why do I rank in the map pack from my office but not from across town?
Because proximity is one of the three ranking factors, results genuinely differ by where the searcher stands. Checking your position from your own premises always flatters it. The honest test is a rank tracker set to specific postcodes across your service area.
