How to Get Your Business Into Google AI Overviews

The box above the results is the new first position.

What Changed At The Top Of The Page

For many searches, Google now writes an answer at the top of the results page and cites a few sources beside it. Below that sit the map pack and the traditional links.

For a local business this changes the shape of the opportunity. The visual top of the page is now a summary, and your goal is to be one of the sources it draws from.

The good news is that the sources are usually drawn from pages already ranking well for the query. The overview is a filter applied to results you can already influence, which means the work stacks on top of the SEO you are doing.

Which Searches Trigger One

Overviews appear most for questions, comparisons and explanations. They appear least for navigational searches, where someone wants a specific site, and for the most obviously transactional local searches, where the map pack answers the intent better.

That gives you a useful split. Searches like "plumber near me" will keep being won in the map pack and your Google Business Profile is the lever. Searches like "how much does it cost to replace a boiler" or "do I need planning permission for a garage conversion" are where an overview is likely, and your content is the lever.

The second group matters because it is where people are before they are ready to hire. Being the cited source in that answer is how you become the name they recognise when they are ready.

Answer The Question In The First Two Sentences

The pattern that gets cited is consistent. A heading that matches the question closely, then a direct answer immediately below it, then supporting detail.

A page that opens with two paragraphs about your company history before answering will lose to a page that answers first, even if the first page is more thorough overall. Depth still helps, it just has to come second.

Write the answer so it survives being lifted out. Include the qualifier in the sentence. "In the UK a standard boiler replacement typically runs between two and three and a half thousand pounds including installation" works alone. "It depends on the model, but usually somewhere in that range" does not.

Cover The Follow Up Questions Too

Overviews often address a cluster of related questions in one answer, and they draw from different sources for different parts of it. A page that covers the main question and the four obvious follow ups has more surfaces to be cited from than a page that covers only one.

Find the follow ups in the People Also Ask box, in your Search Console query report, and in what customers ask you on the phone. That last source is the best one and almost nobody mines it.

Structure them as their own headings with their own direct answers rather than weaving them into prose. One question, one heading, one clear answer, then detail.

Make Yourself Easy To Trust

Google has been explicit that it favours content with evident expertise and clear accountability, and this applies more strictly where the topic touches money, health or safety, which covers a great many trades and clinics.

The practical version for a local business. Put a real author on the page with real credentials, so a roofing article is written by the roofer and says so. Show the qualifications, registrations and trade body memberships that apply. Date the page and update it when the facts change. Cite the actual regulations or standards where the answer depends on them.

None of this is decoration. A page from a named, registered tradesperson answering a question about building regulations is a materially better source than an anonymous blog, and the systems are increasingly good at telling the difference.

The Traffic Question

It is worth being honest about the trade off. When Google answers a question in the overview, some people who would have clicked through no longer need to. Publishers have measured real declines in clicks on informational queries.

For a local business the calculation is different from a publisher's, because you are selling boiler replacements, and page views are only a means to that. Being named as the source in the answer a customer reads, in their own town, is often worth more than the click, and the people who do click through afterwards are further along than an average visitor.

The practical response is to spend your effort on questions that lead to work. A cited answer about the cost of a job in your area is worth a great deal, while a cited answer about the history of plumbing is worth nothing, however much traffic it draws.

Tracking It

Search Console does not separate overview appearances from ordinary results, so you cannot report on this cleanly. What you can watch is the pattern. A page holding its impressions while losing clicks and average position is often a page being summarised above the results.

Alongside that, run manual checks. Take your top twenty commercial and question queries, search them monthly in an incognito window, and record whether an overview appears and who it cites. It is manual and it is the most reliable picture available.

At askotter this monitoring is part of what the site does after launch. It reads your Search Console data, notices when a page starts behaving like a page being summarised, and proposes the content change with the numbers attached for a person to approve.
