Generative Engine Optimization: A Plain Guide
Some of it is new. Most of it is work you were already supposed to be doing.
What The Term Means
Generative engine optimization, usually shortened to GEO, is the practice of getting your business represented well in answers produced by generative AI systems. Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot.
The distinction people draw between GEO and AEO is fuzzy and the two terms are used interchangeably by most of the industry. If it helps: answer engine optimization tends to be framed around being the source that answers a question, and generative engine optimization around how your business is described inside generated text. In practice they describe the same work.
What matters more than the vocabulary is knowing which parts of it are different from what you already do, so you do not pay twice for the same work under a new name.
The Part That Is New
Three things do change.
The unit is the claim, not the page. A generative system is pulling individual statements out of your content and stitching them into an answer. So a specific, self contained, checkable sentence is worth more than a well optimized page whose meaning depends on the six paragraphs around it.
Off-site sources carry more weight than usual. Because your own site's claims about your quality are worthless as evidence, these systems lean disproportionately on third party sources. Directories, reviews, local press, trade bodies. In ordinary SEO those help. Here they are frequently what the answer is built from.
There is no ranking to check. You cannot look up your position. The output varies between users, between phrasings of the same question and between days, so the honest measurement is sampling rather than tracking. Anyone showing you a precise GEO rank number is showing you their own tool's estimate.
The Part That Is Just SEO
Most of the checklist you will be sold as GEO is ordinary good practice, and that is not a criticism, it just means you should not be charged separately for it.
Being crawlable and indexed. Having pages that match real questions. Clear headings. Structured data. Consistent business information across the web. Genuine expertise on the page with a real author. Reviews and local citations. Fast, readable pages.
Every one of those was on a competent SEO checklist five years ago. The reason they show up on GEO lists is that they are the inputs to search, and search is what generative systems retrieve from. The pipeline runs through the same place it always did.
So the correct posture for a small business is to do the fundamentals properly, and then add the three differences from the previous section on top.
Writing For Extraction
This is where most of the practical work lands. The pattern is consistent across every one of these systems.
Lead with the answer. Heading matches the question, first two sentences answer it, detail follows. Do not build up to it.
Make sentences survive being lifted. Include the subject and the qualifier in the sentence itself. "Ashford Plumbing covers Ashford, Tenterden and the surrounding villages" can be quoted. "We cover the surrounding villages too" cannot, because the surrounding what is in a different paragraph.
Publish specifics. Numbers, ranges, timeframes, named places, named services, qualifications. Vagueness is unquotable here, and an unquotable page is invisible to a system whose only job is quoting.
Use ordinary vocabulary and write the words customers say. A system matching a question to an answer cannot connect "blocked drain" to your "Hydro-Flow Restoration Package".
What Not To Bother With
A few things being sold as GEO tactics do not hold up.
Stuffing pages with question phrasings. Twenty near-identical headings asking the same thing in different words reads as spam to both a human and a ranking system, and it does not improve extraction.
llms.txt files. The idea is a file telling AI crawlers how to read your site. It is a reasonable proposal and no major AI system currently commits to using it as a ranking or retrieval input. It costs nothing to publish one and it should not be sold to you as a service.
Paying for placement in AI answers. There is no such product for organic answers. Anyone selling guaranteed inclusion in ChatGPT recommendations is selling something they cannot deliver, in the same way rankings guarantees were sold a decade ago.
Writing content specifically for models rather than people. Beyond the structural changes above, content that reads as machine-targeted tends to be thin, and thin content underperforms in the search layer that feeds retrieval anyway.
How Much It Is Worth Right Now
Worth being straight about this. For a typical local business, referral traffic from AI assistants today is small next to the map pack and ordinary organic search. If you have a fixed budget and your Google Business Profile is a mess, fix that first. It will produce more calls this quarter than any amount of GEO work.
The case for doing it anyway is that the overlap is nearly total. The work that makes you citable is the same work that makes you rank, plus a change in how you write your answers, which costs nothing extra once you know the pattern.
And the visits that do come through tend to convert well, because someone arriving after an assistant recommended you by name has already been given a reason to trust you.
Where This Fits At askotter
We do not sell this as a separate line item, because it is not a separate project. We build your website, and then it keeps getting better. Part of what that means now is that the pages are written to be extractable, the structured data stays in step with what the page says, and the business facts stay consistent across the places machines read them.
The site connects to Google Analytics and Search Console on day one, so when a page starts holding impressions while losing clicks, or when AI referral traffic starts appearing on a page, that shows up as a flagged change with a proposed fix and a reason attached. A person approves it before anything ships.
Self serve starts at $99/mo, managed is $600/mo, and the monitoring platform is included with both.
