GEO vs AEO vs SEO: What Each One Means

Three acronyms, one body of work, and a lot of people selling the difference.

The Short Version

SEO is getting your pages to rank in search results. AEO is being the source that answers a question. GEO is being described accurately inside AI generated text.

They are three views of the same problem, which is whether the systems people use to find businesses can find yours, understand it, and trust it.

The overlap is somewhere around eighty percent. What follows is the twenty percent that differs, and how to decide where your time goes.

SEO: Ranking A Page

The goal is a position in a list of links, and the unit of work is a page. You want a page that matches an intent, on a site with enough authority to be trusted, that is technically able to be crawled and indexed.

The measurement is good. Search Console tells you impressions, clicks, average position and the queries producing them, per page, for free.

For a brick and mortar business the map pack sits inside this bucket too, and for most local businesses it is the single most valuable surface there is. Someone searching for a plumber near them and tapping a map result is as close to a customer as a search gets.

If you do one thing, do this one. Everything downstream retrieves from it.

AEO: Being The Answer

The goal is to be extracted and cited, and the unit of work is a claim rather than a page. A system reads your page, lifts a sentence, and attributes it to you.

What differs from SEO is mostly writing structure. A question as a heading, a direct answer immediately below it, specifics rather than generalities, and sentences that carry their own context so they still mean something outside the page.

Measurement is poor. There is no report. You test by asking the questions yourself across the assistants and recording what comes back.

The work is cheap once you know the pattern, because you are changing how existing content is organised rather than producing new content.

GEO: Being Described Well

The goal is that when a generative system writes about your category in your area, your business appears in the text and what it says is true. The unit of work is your presence across the whole web.

What differs here is the weight on third party sources. Because your own site's claims about your quality are not evidence, these systems lean on directories, reviews, local news and trade listings. A lot of the work is therefore off your website entirely.

Measurement is the worst of the three. Answers vary by user, by phrasing and by day. Sampling monthly is the honest approach.

What Overlaps

Almost all of the foundation. If your site is crawlable, fast, well structured, marked up with accurate schema, written by someone with evident expertise, consistent in its business details across the web, and backed by real reviews and local citations, you have done the bulk of all three.

That is why the sensible answer to "should I buy GEO services" is usually to check whether the fundamentals are done first. A business with an incomplete Google Business Profile and a slow site does not have a GEO problem.

The additive work, once the foundation is in place, is small: restructure your key pages to answer first, publish specifics you were previously vague about, and clean up how your business is described in third party sources.

Where To Spend Your Time

For a small brick and mortar business, in order.

Google Business Profile, completely filled in and actively maintained. This is the highest return work available to a local business and it is free.

Reviews, continuously, across Google and the platforms that matter in your trade. They feed rankings, they feed answers, and they close customers on their own.

A site that loads fast, works on a phone, and makes contacting you easy. Traffic you already have, converted better.

Service and location pages that answer real questions with real specifics, structured answer first.

Consistent business details and listings everywhere machines read them.

Then, and only then, the sampling and monitoring of what AI systems say about you.

That order is deliberate. Every item feeds the ones below it, and the first three will produce more work this quarter than the last three. But the last three are where the businesses that get this right early will be sitting when the volume moves.
