Garage door spring replacement

Torsion springs do the lifting, and most are rated for about 10,000 cycles, which works out to seven to ten years. When one breaks you hear a bang from the garage and the opener strains or gives up. Please do not try to lift the door by hand or keep pressing the button; a door with a broken spring can weigh 200 pounds.

Replacing a single spring starts at $265. On two-spring doors we recommend replacing both at $385, since the second one is the same age and usually fails soon after. Every spring job includes new cables where worn, a lube of all moving parts and a balance test.

Can I replace a torsion spring myself?
